No. He’s never going to be happy, he’s been cursed by the gods. That’s kind on the point.
My understanding (poorly educated in Greek mythology) is that Sisyphus is being punished by performing a never ending task for all eternity, there’s nothing saying he can’t or isn’t allowed to enjoy it.
I don’t believe crushing shit is prohibited, as long as the shit being crushed is either on his way up, or the boulder’s way down. In this situation it seems both options are within Sisyphus’ allowed routes, and he gets/has to crush some shit either way. So yes, Sisyphus is happy either way.
Within context I think the line
“One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”
is intended to mean Camus sees Sisyphus accepting of his role, finding happiness in the work and not in the result. But I first read the line alone and also with context as the reader must imagine he’s happy, otherwise none of the philosophy works. Sisyphus is probably pissed at this point, as no one has asked him how he feels.
Not even in the work itself but in the small moments of freedom. It’s not rolling the boulder up but when the boulder is rolling down and Sisyphus is free just until he reaches the boulder again and starts all over. Camus contrasts that with workers eager to build one’s career, not realizing that the next step won’t make you happy either. Sisyphus, by knowing there is no meaning, can enjoy the small things unlike us who assume a meaning that isn’t there.
