At first I was wondering how could there be such an over representation given the proportion of people in the population who are trans. But then I remembered that the trans community were given a particularly strong motivation to get involved in politics in the last decade or so.

I’m surprised it is all women! Is this a complete list? I can understand why transwomen would be more motivated to get involved in politics, but its still surprising to me that its 100% women.

      Tap for discussing bigotry

I don’t want to appear insensitive or anything, but 99% of political discourse seems to be implicitly about trans women. I’m not entirely sure why, but conservatives don’t seem to have as much outrage about trans men. When they’re being bigoted towards trans, arguing about sports, policing gender roles, or trying to make it illegal, they actually mean MtF trans.

People don’t talk about them as much online either. For example, I can’t remember the last FtM meme I saw on the various trans communities here. Most people I speak to in real life seem to forget that they even exist or something; it’s very strange.

It might simply be that it’s less common (though I couldn’t find any reliable statistics). My personal theory however is that it’s crossing some homophobia wires in their brains. Like they’re terrified of accidentally being attracted to a trans person. Maybe sprinkle in some misogyny as well.

Anyway, I think for those reasons, trans women are far more motivated to get into politics to protect themselves than trans men are.

Binary trans men are able to be “stealth” much easier because of how testosterone works. You hear anti-transmasc discourse in cis gay spaces because those men get sexual with men and some really dislike vulvas and vaginas.

If they aren’t stealth, conservatives see that as a woman and thus a non-threat. They can dismiss them as “confused dykes” and proceed to misgender and/or ignore them. See also: non-binary transmascs.

Because testosterone works the way it does, trans women have more to do than “just” hormones and so theyre more easily targeted. Plus, conservatives see someone who actively rebuked all the power of masculinity to “choose” to be “weak” and rationalize they deserve the poor treatment for said weakness.

On top of all that, being trans and/or nonbinary threatens the cultural narrative that gender is fixed and innately impacts what you are permitted to do in life. This threatens patriarchy because if anyone can suddenly switch genders or opt out of binary segregation, it means admitting that gender roles are manufactured and thus losing a vector of control over people.

Editing to add: there are more trans women visible online because they were once welcomed as men online and this is still their home now that theyre women, as opposed to those who experienced the worst of the internet as women and learned quickly not to mention their gender.

I think you’re on the right track. They’re terrified of being attracted to someone with a dick (MtF w/ no bottom surgery). That’s where the whole “biological woman” thing comes from, anyway. The hilarious part, for me, is that it’s almost certainly happened to most of them at some point. They don’t realize how many women are just extremely “passing” as a woman (I’m not trying to be bigoted, just using words they would say to illustrate the point). Like, trans women are women, and these chucklefucks are so in their own heads about homophobia that MtF scares the hell out of them.

I assume Trans Women got socialized as men in their formative years of childhood, so no matter how much they might have not fit in they certainly got an underlying message of being capable, they didn’t get corrected for being “bossy” or loud or demanding and probably got discouraged from being “submissive” in any way.

Even people who don’t believe in gendernorms will enforce them subconciously on kids and male socialization is just so much more likely to produce people who ask and fight for leadership roles.

I am not questioning their womanhood in any way, just to be clear.

The downvotes are wild. Children are socialized differently based on the gender they were assigned at birth - that’s a fact.

Growing up being called “bossy” does hell on one’s ability to speak out for one’s self. That shit turned me into a doormat in my teens, and enabled people to take advantage of me both in my personal life and professional life well through my 20s. Society worked hard to try to make me small and quiet, to put up with crap instead of speaking out when things were wrong. It’s a mess that I’m still in the process of untangling, and I have little doubt many AFAB have gone through the same thing.

Though with all that said, I’d like to hear directly from transmen about their experiences in this regard.

Absolutely. It is very delicate because any transperson is marginalized, yet you can still see patriarcal tendencies with transpeople. Transwomen tend to be relatively more visible and vocal than transmen who seem to get doubly invisiblized.

I feel like there is a risk of being labelled as transphobic to discuss this, which is pretty unfortunate because it is felt by some transmen (see communities of transmen excluding transwomen for them not to dominate discourse).

But ‘trans-’ (and ‘cis-’!) is also a prefix. cf. “transnational”, “transalpine”, “transcranial”, “transcode”, etc. To be clear, I’m not saying we shouldn’t insist on the space, but implying that it would otherwise be malformed or ungrammatical is a bad argument.

You are linguistically correct - thats why transgender is one word, as a concept. As a noun, theres a space because trans/cis becomes an adjective. :)

Someone in my medical team asked me why I changed my gender marker back to my AGAB in my medical records when I moved to Arizona a couple months ago. All I said was that “I didn’t want to be a target” when I’m just trying to get medical care. I hope they see all the BS trans hate that was approved by voters this week and think of what I said. We are targets, and we do not deserve to be

Wife is the same. She kept all her documents AGAB, and appropriately thinks of them as “wig papers.” She won’t bother changing them because 1) she barely needs to 2) the state should be destroyed, 3) comrades know she’s fempres.
It’s more sad we are being targeted even here in 196@lemmy.blahaj.zone 😭

Which states have still never had a transgender rep? I want to lord over them with my smug sense of superiority as a Georgian, since the opportunity is so rare.
