Is it part of the aesthetic to do it poorly? I’ve noticed the paint often seems be chipped or applied unevenly and I’ve never felt comfortable asking if that’s an intentional, stylistic choice.

in my experience as a goth meeting gays, they always have impeccable nail polish. every time. even after moving, so it’s not a regional thing. they’re just on point, unlike my sloppy ass lol

The only goths I know aren’t straight (one bi guy, one lesbian)

A clear underlayer is the most important part of any nail painting. Especially sloppy painting, and even more so if you have to be surreptitious about painting your nails. If you don’t have a real Base Coat, clear polish or top coat is better than nothing. Don’t clean up the edges where you slopped over onto your cuticles and/or skin, just let it dry a few minutes before applying the black (or any color). Now clean up the edges, noticing how the clear kept the color from staining the skin. It’s also keeping you nails unstained, so you can remove or change it more easily. If the color’s on your cuticles but it’s an even curve, you can leave it. Tomorrow it will wash off and only stay on your nails. Now put on another clear layer to protect it.
