Y’all need to also stop taking it to take a shit. I deal with my intrusive thoughts just like you but c’mon now. Just stop the addiction at least when in the oval office. Even more so while IN PUBLIC RESTROOMS. Just stop. You’re already taking the nature call. Other callers can wait.

Add me to the list of people who just learned that anybody takes their phone into the shower regularly.

From reading the comments though, it seems to be a mix of phone/stimulation-addicted people and people who aren’t. But I’m skeptical of those who claim they aren’t.

Fucking Christ, so phone fiends can’t even take 2-5 minutes to wash themselves with out getting their stimulation?

    Civilization can’t survive this.

Taking your phone into the shower, waterproof or not, is psychopath behavior. Jesus fuck you guys, take 10 minutes of your day to peel your eyes off of the screen and just relax for a bit.

i use mine when i take a shower to play music that i can use to time how long it takes. i do not have it in the shower stall with me just hooked up to a bluetooth speaker on a shelf above the toilet next to the stall. the phone itself is laid on the lavatory counter about a meter from the shower and covered by the clothes i removed prior to getting wet so it doesnt get any water at all on it

This thread is a great reminder that Lemmy users do not represent the general public. I put a phone mount in the shower so I don’t have to pause a podcast or whatever to take a shower, it’s nice. I don’t really love showers and struggle to stop what I’m doing to change direction, so it’s one less barrier to entry. My partner and some friends who have used my shower have also appreciated it.

      Nah hold on.

Manufacturers stole repairability and the headphone jack from us under the guise of waterproofing and now you make fun of people who use the feature?!?

If I had to give that shit up then I want the damn feature. Otherwise waterproof speakers exist and we never had to give up anything.

Taking away the headphone jack was more likely so they could try to make you buy $200 wireless headphones that need to be replaced every few years.

Every few years? Brave of you to assume that after owning them for 6 months or so I haven’t sent all of my wireless earbuds through the wash because I didn’t feel them in the pocket when doing laundry.

Now I’m using over ear wireless headphones because I can’t mistakenly wash a huge set of cans.

Side note: I can wash your mom’s huge set of cans

Because said waterproofing was for accidental, rare incidents of exposure, such that you have enough time to yank it somewhere safe before water penetrated.

Waterproofing was never meant for intentional, repeated, or extended exposure to extreme environments. That’s what waterproof cases are for. You know, the kind that allow your phone to go intentionally into water.

      <raises hand>

I listen to The Daily podcast or audiobooks. The phone goes into a little 3D printed holder to keep it dry and redirect the sound. I’ve done this for years with multiple phones, never any issues.

Even though modern iPhones are “waterproof” I like to keep it as dry as possible. The touchscreen stops working reliably if it gets wet, and the speakers can get blocked by water droplets and reduces the volume.

It’s also worth noting that living in the PNW requires using the bathroom fan to keep the moisture down. The bathroom never gets that steamy, which I’m sure drastically changes the moisture exposure equation.

I have a stand opposite where it stays dry. My shower is fairly big and I put it where the shampoo and conditioner is and it’s where the wall is … I’d never keep it wet.

I don’t touch the screen. I just listen to things. I could just leave it on the counter.

I have a lot of friends around me and no one to turn to but yeah, I’m not looking for an online consult right now (as in I’m not holding you or any other Lemmy socially hostage about this). I just can’t bear my own thoughts right now.

In the bathroom in general, I can understand. Even without a fan, the steam rarely reaches countertop height, so putting it on the countertop or the lid of the toilet or something else low still makes sense if you are in the shower.

My issue lies in having it IN the shower, and having it taking the moisture straight in the teeth. Like… why?? It’s not like it is impossible to hear from next to the shower, well out of the way of said moisture.

I wish I had your brain. I feel like unless I have a constant stream of information coming into my brain, I might go insane.

It’s awful, and unhealthy, and I’m trying to figure out how to escape this paranoid insanity, but it’s what I’ve got until I can figure out the fix. Reminds me, need to schedule my next therapist appointment.

        Exercise:

        • Set a timer for 1 minute.

        • Sit down and do nothing.

Do that every day. After a while, you’ll adjust and it wont be painful. Then do 2 minutes. Then do 5. Then do 15. Every day.

        Here’s what happened:

You’ve lived your entire life in a bowl of cocaine. You were born into it. When your parents wanted a break, they gave you some coke. When you were good, they gave you some coke. After you completed your homework, you were allowed a little coke. When you grew up, if you feel tired, or feel like you don’t want to do something, you can have a little nose candy to recharge.

If you want to stop using so much cocaine, you can’t just go cold turkey. You need to start by being able to survive one minute at a time without it.

It’s easy to just remove the bowl of cocaine and not use cocaine. But that’s not going to help you practice choosing not to do cocaine when it is available.

unless I have a constant stream of information coming into my brain, I might go insane

I felt the same way. It’s an upbringing thing, and I’m not sure it was due to being raised poor by parents always jobbing – dad was employed for 5 different jobs at one point. I gotta be working.

My wife was raised by parents with job security and lived in one house her entire childhood. Parents were home at 4 and then 5, and knew (and taught) healthy disagreement over contentious issues. Her whole family is a breath of fresh air vs the raccoons my family must resemble.

She took me on a vacation, like the first one I ever had. It was to the Dominican, just some resort (occidental in punta cana). I asked what our plans were while we were there, because I gotta have that calendar full.

        “Nothing,” she said.

        “Nothing?”

        “Nothing.”

And we did, largely, nothing. 10 days, beach chairs and impeccable waiters at beck and call. We saw the whales and did a snorkel, and we went to the Amelia supermarket for snacks…

But really we sat and watched the ocean. We talked like spouses should, holding hands and breathing easily. There was no work, no issues, no jobs; and, above all the cost of going and staying, the big thing a trip like that did was to get us away from the churn and swirl and rumbling gnawing stress of western life.

You may not realize it, but you need some downtime: real downtime.

Don’t go anywhere fancy, but turn the phone over and just be for a sec. Be you, be present, be interactive, be observant; and just breathe.

I found it life-changing. We don’t go to fancy places very often, but we do reserve some time to be ourselves like that, and it’s a very good thing.

Maybe it’ll help for you too? Either way, I hope you find that balance and sanctuary too, so you can exist for just a calming moment without the fear of missing out on the trivia-stream.

The only way to get better is to stop consuming content! Choose a weekend, tell your friends you will be out of touch, and turn off your phone for a couple of days (if you can’t do that, just shut off WIFI and data so you can still text/call). It really won’t be as bad as you think, and you might even like it - but you will have to do stuff to occupy your hands. Cook, walk, read easy books, exercise, etc.

Don’t take big steps. Take small ones.

In the running world, there’s this thing called “Couch-to-5k”. Its a progran that can literally take you from square one - the couch - to a non-stop 5k run. Its all about small gains and slow incremental progress.

A few small conscious efforts to disconnect from your phone every day, even for 15 mins at a time, will slowly add up to bigger and bigger gains over time. If you can break the impulse to check your phone by disrupting the immediate availability of your phone, you might be able to get the ball rolling pretty quickly.
